Sweaters riding up in the front? Bust darts might be the fix you didn’t know you needed.

These short rows add vertical shaping to the front only of your sweater, helping it hang straight and fit better. If you've ever tugged a sweater down, adding bust darts could make all the difference.

Why Bust Darts Work

Bust darts add just the right amount of length to the front of your sweater, without changing the back. They are especially useful if you have a full bust, wear a bra, or just want a better-fitting silhouette.

  • Stop sweaters from “riding up” in front
  • Create a smoother, more balanced fit
  • Use with any yarn, gauge, or pattern
  • Custom-fit your sweaters with ease

How to Add Them

With our Bust Dart Tool, adding darts is quick and easy. Just plug in your gauge and desired shaping — we’ll do the math.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are bust darts in knitting?

Bust darts are short rows added to the front only of a sweater to provide extra length and shape around the bust area, improving the overall fit and preventing the sweater from riding up.

Do I need a special pattern to add bust darts?

No! You can use the Bust Dart Tool with any Knit It Now pattern. Just plug in your gauge and the amount of shaping you'd like — the tool does the rest.

Will adding bust darts affect the back of my sweater?

Not at all. Bust darts are added to the front of your knitting only. Length is added only to the center front. The side seams will still match. Your back piece remains unchanged.

What if I’m unsure about my gauge?

It’s important to swatch first and use accurate gauge measurements. Our Gauge Calculator can help confirm your numbers before you start.

Can I use bust darts with hand knitting patterns converted for the machine?

Yes! Bust darts can be added — even if the original pattern didn’t include them.

Great information to know. Can this same principal be used for pregnant mom's to be and/or men's "Beer Bellys?"
